Everyone’s got a favorite when it comes to ribs, we’re no exception. But do you really know the difference between rib types? Here at Sonny’s, we’re all about helping you find the best ribs for your next BBQ lunch or dinner. Without further ado, let’s break it down so you can order like a pro.

Baby Back Ribs: Lean and Tender
Tender, lean, and fall off the bone. Baby Back Ribs come from the upper part of the ribcage of the pig, near the backbone. They’re smaller than other rib types, which means they cook up quicker and have a slightly sweeter taste. If you’re looking for something that’s not a lot of work to eat, Baby Backs are your go-to.
On Sonny’s Menu: Our Baby Back Ribs are slow-smoked to perfection and glazed with our famous Sweet BBQ Sauce. Try them as a full rack or part of a Pick 2 or Pick 3 Combo.

St. Louis Ribs: Meaty and Flavorful
If you like a little more meat and a lot of flavor, St. Louis-style ribs are calling your name. These ribs come from the belly side of the ribcage and are trimmed for a uniform, rectangular shape. That kind of trimming is St. Louis Style. They’re meatier than Baby Backs, too. However, unlike those, St. Louis ribs should not be “fall off the bone.” When you bite into them, it should be a clean bite, meaning you’ll be able to see your teeth marks in the meat.
On Sonny’s Menu: Our St. Louis Ribs are smoked low and slow, giving you that perfect bite every time. Try a few of them on a combo or fill up your plate with them.
Spare Ribs: Big, Bold, and Juicy
Spare ribs are the big, bold choice. They’re cut from the belly and have more fat, which means more flavor. They take a little longer to cook, but the payoff is worth it, juicy, tender ribs with that classic BBQ taste.
Pro Tip: While we don’t currently feature Spare Ribs on our menu, they’re a staple in the BBQ world. If you’re curious, ask your pitmaster next time you visit. They can shed some light on these.

Which Rib Types Are Best for You?
If you want lean and tender, go for Baby Back Ribs. If you’re craving something hearty and smoky, St. Louis Ribs are the way to go. Either way, you’re in for a treat when you stop by your local Sonny’s or pull up to our drive-thru.
