Food insecurity is a main giving pillar at Sonny’s and is something we are committed to putting an end to. We have an ongoing partnership with Blessings in a Backpack to raise funds, volunteer, and use our platform to bring awareness to the non-profit organization. Together, we are actively working toward a world where no child has to wonder where their next meal is coming from.
When we first joined forces with the organization, we hosted a packing event at Sonny’s BBQ HQ to kick off our partnership. This was not only a great bonding experience for the team, but it also helped them learn a little more about what Blessings in a Backpack does for children in need. In the first few months of working with them, we were able to raise $10,000 for the organization with the help of our generous guests and team members across our footprint. More recently, we celebrated Random Acts of Kindness week by hosting another packing event at Sonny’s BBQ HQ. We had a lot of team members gather to pack 1,000 bags filled with two breakfast entrees, two lunches, two snacks, and kind notes to each bag as a surprise for each child to read. At the end of the event, Kennon, our Chief Kindness Officer and Claudia, a Kindness Crew member, surprised the organization with a $1,000 donation that will go towards feeding 250 more children in the Greater Orlando area.
Blessings in a Backpack is a national organization made up of eight regional chapters and more than 1,100 volunteer-driven programs. The organization’s goal is to mobilize communities, individuals, and resources to provide food for school-aged children across America who may otherwise go hungry on weekends. Since opening its doors in 2008, Blessings in a Backpack has provided 26.7 million hunger-free weekends for more than 927,000 children nationwide.
