The man who started it all: Sonny Tillman. Our founder began a legacy back in 1968, and it’s one we continue to hold dear today. Even though he’s no longer with us, his birthday is coming up soon, and we still want to make sure we celebrate it. In honor of him, here are five things you may not know about Sonny Tillman.
1. Sonny’s First Name Wasn’t Actually Sonny
We all know him as Sonny, but that’s not actually his first name. It’s Floyd. He rarely went by that, though. If you stopped him on the street in Gainesville with a simple “Hey, Sonny,” he’d always greet you with a smile. Sonny Tillman loved his community, and his nickname matched his sunny personality perfectly.
2. Sonny’s Original Specialty Wasn’t Pulled Pork
When you think of Sonny’s, pulled pork is likely the first thing that comes to mind. But that item was actually added to the menu well after 1968. Sonny started with sliced pork, and it was his specialty. He wanted to serve something you couldn’t get anywhere else, and to this day, it’s not an easy cut of barbecue to find. Next time you’re at Sonny’s, try his original favorite: a Sliced Pork Sandwich Big Deal on garlic bread, with fries and a sweet tea.
3. Tillman’s Table Was His Favorite Seat in the House
Sonny spent years working the pit and running the restaurant on Waldo Road in Gainesville. Even after he passed the stores along, he still came back to visit from time to time, and his favorite spot to sit was Table 1-1, the first table on the right as you walk in the door. He’d greet guests as they arrived, catch up with the locals, and share his signature smile.
In his honor, Table 1-1 at every Sonny’s location is now known as Tillman’s Table. Look for the placard and photo of Sonny as you walk in. Next time you stop by, we recommend grabbing that seat. It’s the best one in the house.
4. Sonny’s Leading Lady Was His Wife, Lucille
Sonny never could have opened his doors without his wife, Lucille, by his side every step of the way. The two were married for over 70 years and brought joy to everyone around them. In her spare time, Lucille loved cooking Southern meals, entertaining friends and family, and cheering on the Florida Gators. Simply put, Lucille was just as important to Sonny as the restaurant that carries his name.
5. Sonny’s Philanthropy Included Alachua County Firefighters
Sonny’s community extended well beyond the guests inside his restaurant. On several occasions, he welcomed local Alachua County firefighters and first responders in for a meal, completely on him. That giving spirit and Southern hospitality is a core part of Sonny’s, and it’s one we work hard to keep alive today.
Carrying On Sonny’s Legacy
From a sliced pork sandwich to a sign with his name on it, every corner of Sonny’s still carries a piece of Floyd “Sonny” Tillman. His hospitality, his community spirit, and his love for good BBQ are baked into everything we do, whether that’s a smile at the door or a plate of slow-smoked pork.
