Sonny’s BBQ Pitmaster Luis of Apopka Hosts Lunch & Learn for Students
Getting involved in your community is always a great way to befriend those around you. We love going out and meeting the younger generations who may one day be future Pitmasters at Sonny’s. Earlier this month, the team at our Apopka location hosted a lunch and learn at Wekiva High School. They taught 40 students in their culinary program about BBQ while serving up some delicious Sonny’s lunch.
Showin’ the Ropes
Luis Lainez, Pitmaster and Manager of the Apopka Sonny’s, did an incredible job teaching them all about our brand and how we get our slow-smoked BBQ to perfection. He shared how he got his start in the food industry and how he became part of the Sonny’s family. He demonstrated our different meats, explained all the temperatures and woods needed and shared a few of his own tips and tricks to smokin’ BBQ.
The students, many of them being high school seniors or upcoming seniors, eagerly learned and engaged in the demonstration. We gave them an opportunity to ask important questions about different cuts of meat, working in the food industry and advice for getting their foot in the door.
A Special Surprise for the Students
Before we left, we wanted to do something special and leave them with something to remember us. That’s why we surprised them with a brand-new smoker for their classroom. Now they will be able to take all the tips Luis gave them and put them to great use! They were so excited and could not wait to test it out with their teacher, Chef Bates.
It was such a fun experience to see their excitement throughout the entire event. It also warmed our hearts to see the impact made by teaching them something they might not have had the opportunity to learn before. They left a lasting impression on us and we can’t wait until the next time we are able to go back!
